Clancy 2646 — More Than a Beautiful Place to Stay

There are some places that are beautiful the moment you walk through the door, and then there are the places where, after you have been there for a little while, you start noticing all the thought that sits underneath the beauty.

Clancy 2646 in Corowa is one of those places.

I went there to photograph the property for Ally and Kristian and, yes, it is an absolute gift to photograph. The rooms are beautifully considered, the styling is confident without trying too hard, the light moves wonderfully through the house and there are little details everywhere that make you want to keep looking.

But the thing I kept noticing was the care.

Not the sort that announces itself loudly, but the quiet kind that makes a stay feel easy and generous. The things that have been thought about before a guest ever arrives, from how the rooms work together to the small touches that make you feel welcomed rather than simply accommodated.

Ally and Kristian have created Clancy with a real sense of what it means to spend time in this part of regional Australia. Wherever they can, they have chosen to source locally and connect the house to the people, produce and businesses around them, which gives the property a sense of place that you simply cannot manufacture by filling a house with beautiful things.

That matters.

We are lucky in this part of the world to have extraordinary food, wine, growers, makers and small businesses, and I love seeing accommodation that doesn't try to exist separately from all of that, but instead becomes another way for visitors to discover the region.

While I was photographing Clancy, I found myself thinking less about photographing individual rooms and more about what it might actually feel like to stay there.

What does it feel like to arrive after a drive and finally put the bags down? Where would you make a coffee in the morning? Where does the afternoon light fall? What would you notice when you wandered through the house slowly, rather than looking at it as a collection of rooms on a booking website?

Those are the photographs I am always looking for.

Of course people need to see the bedrooms, the kitchen, the bathroom and the spaces they are booking, but good accommodation photography also has to do something a little less practical. It needs to let someone imagine themselves there.

That might be a glimpse through a doorway, the light hitting a table, a thoughtfully chosen object, something waiting in the kitchen, a corner of the garden or simply a photograph that gives you the feeling that you could arrive, exhale and stay awhile.

Thoughtful styling is a key feature of this property.

This is why I enjoy photographing accommodation and hospitality businesses so much. Behind the most interesting places there are almost always people who care deeply about the experience they are creating, and once you start noticing that, there is a much richer story to photograph than four walls and a nicely made bed.

Clancy photographed beautifully, but more importantly, it felt beautiful to be in.

That is a very different thing.
